So, if you’ve read our OET overview in our previous post, you now know all about the OET and are ready to start your preparation. Well then, let’s get going. First up, some top tips to help you in the OET Speaking Subtest: let’s help you Upgrade your OET!

OET SPEAKING: Tip 1

One of the things my students have found the trickiest, is starting. The thing to remember is that the OET speaking subtest is designed to mimic a medical situation. So, start off the way you would normally start a medical consultation.

If you know the patient (and the instructions you get in the OET subtest will tell you this - your patient has come in to…), then don’t start by introducing yourself - they are your patient and so already know you. Instead, say something like:

“Hello there, Mrs James, it’s nice to see you again. How can I help you today?”

Of course, if it’s a different situation where you don’t know the patient - e.g - You’re talking to the parents of a 6-year-old girl who’ve brought their daughter to A&E - you can start with something like this:

“Good morning, my name is Jayden. I’m the Duty Nurse today. I’m just going to ask you a few questions to get more information about why you’ve brought your daughter in to see us today.”

Sometimes, of course, the patient may start the conversation, but the trick is, when you read the OET instructions card, put yourself in the situation immediately. Think about the best way to start, and don’t just sit there and wait for the interlocutor to begin - the patient wants to see you, so you can begin.

We're going to be posting a series of ten tips for you to try out in your OET practice, so keep checking back for more ideas. Look out for our next OET speaking tip, coming up in our next blog post, soon.
